Microsoft released  new free virtual machines (2303) to test Windows 11 Moment 2 update

Microsoft has updated the official Windows 11 virtual machines (Windows 11 Development Environment, or WDE), and users can download them for free evaluation. Usually, Microsoft releases a new version every two months, but this time is special. In early March, Microsoft pushed the Windows 11 development environment to version 2302 based on Build 22621.1265, with an expiration date set for May 23, 2023. Now users can download the updated version based on Build 22621.1413, also known as the Windows 11 Moment 2 update.

Same as all other WDE releases, this one has a new expiration date. Users can use the virtual machines for free until June 14, 2023. Afterwards, Windows will start prompting for the Windows 11 license key.

There are four most used virtual machines for Windows development environment: VMWare, Hyper-V Gen2, Parallels, and VirtualBox.

The evaluation virtual machine includes:

  • Window 11 Enterprise (Evaluation)
  • Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# workloads enabled
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 enabled with Ubuntu installed
  • Windows Terminal installed
  • Developer mode enabled

The virtual machines require a computer hard drive with at least 21GB of free space. Users can use the virtual machine without activation, but some features still require a license key. For example, personalization settings cannot be changed. Microsoft also warns that after the expiration, the desktop background will turn black, users will see constant activation notifications, and virtual machines will shut down every hour.
